These Wii games should be played again.
Even though the Wii was known for shovelware and a lack of quality control, it did have a lot of great games, both from Nintendo and from other companies. Unlike the Wii U, which had most of its good exclusive games come over to the Switch, the original Wii did not have this happen.
This is especially sad because the Wii was the only system from that generation that didn’t have HDMI support, so you can’t even connect it to most TVs today. The HDMI-enabled Wii U can play Wii games, but since it hasn’t sold well, most people will probably stick with the original. Getting used to the motion controls could be hard, but it is possible.
The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess
On the Wii U, Twilight Princess was given a new HD version. But because Switch doesn’t have backward compatibility, current gamers can’t easily play this great Zelda game. This is still one of the best 3D Zelda games and many people’s favorite.
Midna is a great supporting character, better than most of the others, and the levels, bosses, and items are all good. Since most 3D Zeldas have a style called “cel shading,” it’s nice to play Twilight Princess, which has a more accurate feel. The Switch version of Skyward Sword was great, so why not Twilight Princess?
Super Mario Galaxy 2
You might not realize what a big deal it was that another main Mario game came out on the same platform. Since the SNES, you usually only got one main Mario game per system. The Wii changed that, though. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a bigger and better version of Mario Galaxy. It has more and better levels than the first game.
You can tell that the creators of these new stages used what they learned from the first game to make them even better and more creative. The new power-ups, like the Cloud Flower, stood out, and it was still fun to ride on Yoshi, even though he isn’t used very often. The only 3D Mario game that isn’t on the Switch is Galaxy 2, which is a shame because it’s one of the best.
Punch-Out!!
Like what happened with 3D Mario, all but one of the main Punch-Out games are on the Nintendo Switch. Punch-Out Wii is not only one of the best games for the system, but also one of the best remakes ever. It might not look like a remake, but a lot of the same tech from the NES game is still there.
No matter how good you are, the game is still fun, rewarding, and hard. There’s not much more exciting than getting numbers here that are almost perfect. It’s also a long book, and just when you think you’ve finished it, you’ll find out you’re only halfway through. The best thing that Next Level Games has ever made, and it’s a shame that it’s not on the Switch.
Madworld
There’s a Nintendo Wii secret gem in Madworld. This was the first game PlatinumGames made, and it was a good one. The comic book-like images of Sin City are a great fit for the Wii, and it’s a lot of fun to try to get the most creative kills. The music is great, and you should listen to it on its own.
But since there are no checkpoints, Madworld can be hard to play. If you die at the last boss, you have to do the whole level over again. This can be annoying, but Madworld is a must-have game for the Wii because it is so different, and it is also worth moving to the Switch and PC.
Scarface: The World Is Yours
Scarface: The World Is Yours is a popular GTA-like game for the PS2 and Wii. You play as Tony Montana, a dream figure for a GTA clone, and you change how the movie ends. Because of how he acts and how often he swears, he’s probably more fun to play as than almost any other main character in the GTA series.
What made the Wii port stand out was the way you could drive with it. It worked wonderfully and was like something brand new in the business. Going back to normal driving in GTA4, with its weird physics, just didn’t feel right. Scarface still has a big fan following, and there are people who want to see it again.
Donkey Kong Country Returns
When Retro Studios was done with the Metroid Prime Trilogy, they would make DKC Returns to bring back the Donkey Kong Country series. DKC Returns has some of the best 2D platforming on the system. It lives up to the standards set by Rare’s games. Returns is fun all the way through because it has a lot of different ways to play each level and a lot of challenges.
It’s better than the second one in some ways. In Tropical Freeze, the bosses are way too long, while in Return, the monsters are easier. Returns was also ported to the 3DS with more content, and since its sequel is already on the Switch, the first game should be too.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
There are four “New Super Mario Bros.” games, but the only one on the Switch is the one for the Wii U. Why not all four, like the DS, 3DS, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii games? The Wii game stood out because it was the first 2D Mario game for a home device since the SNES.
Wordle Unlimited game is a 2D platformer that works well. But its multiplayer is known for being very bad. Rest assured that you will kill other players, either on purpose or by accident. Nintendo should put all of these games for the Switch into one collection, since they are all fun in their own ways.
Zack & Wiki
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure is another Wii game that is a secret gem. It’s a great puzzle game that makes you use the Wii’s controls in a lot of different ways. It’s possible that this is why it hasn’t been updated yet, but it’s still possible. But Zack & Wiki is a very hard game, and most of the problems can only be solved by trying and failing.
All of the characters are great and have that unique Capcom style, so it’s a shame that Zack & Wiki seemed doomed to fail. Even before it came out, most people thought this game wouldn’t do well, and they were right. This is the game that is least likely to be remastered, but it should be.
Super Paper Mario
Super Paper Mario doesn’t get enough attention. Even though it’s not like the last two games, it’s still a good Mario journey on its own. Plus, it’s still weird like Paper Mario. The main part of Super Paper Mario is moving from 2D to 3D, which was really fun and new at the time.
The reality switch is done quite often now, but when it first came out, it was a unique idea. It’s still a fun game to play, and the Wii’s controls aren’t pushed to the limit like they are in Zack & Wiki, so this should be easy to bring over.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
The first Metroid Prime game was remade for the Nintendo Switch, which is great, but what about the two games that came before it? Metroid Prime 3 was one of the first games for the Wii. It was a good way to end the Prime Trilogy. It’s possibly the worst of the three, but that doesn’t mean much because they’re all great. All of the motion buttons worked well, and it felt great to point and shoot.
Some people do like to play games in order, so the other two Prime games really need a remake. Some people like to play through the whole series at once, which could be why they haven’t bought the first remaster yet. They are waiting until they can buy them all at once, which should happen soon.
